Breathwork retreat: where breath opens the door to meditation

Last updated:

A breathwork retreat is a residential program built around guided breathing techniques, usually paired with meditation and rest.

Andrew Keaveney teaches breathwork and meditation together and has done so for over 17 years in the U.S. and India. His Breathwork and Meditation Retreat runs November 5 to 8 at the Art of Living Retreat Center in Boone, North Carolina.

What is the difference between breathwork and meditation?

Breathwork is active: you guide the breath in specific patterns. Meditation is receptive: you rest attention and let the mind settle. Many teachers, Andrew among them, use breathwork first because it gives a busy mind something to do, which can make the meditation that follows feel easier for beginners.

Breathwork workshop or breathwork retreat?

A breathwork workshop is usually a single session or short course where you learn a technique. A breathwork retreat gives you several residential days to practice it repeatedly, alongside meditation, meals and rest. The teaching listed on this site happens through residential retreats.

Andrew has featured SKY, a breathwork practice associated with the Art of Living, in films such as Stemming Student Burnout with SKY. For which techniques a given program teaches, read its official listing.

Online breathwork classes

The programs listed here are in person. The one service stated as available online is the 15-minute Intuitive Life Scan. For current online breathwork classes, check andrewkeaveney.com.

Anyone pregnant or with a medical, heart or breathing condition should speak with a doctor before breathwork and tell the teacher before practice.
